Unit 1 Chemistry of Life

  • Unit 1.1 (Scientific Method) Students engage with the scientific process, the metric system, and key components of an experiment such as controls and the independent variable.
  • Unit 1.2 (Background Chemistry) Students are introduced to the basics of chemistry that are necessary to understand subsequent units that involve; biochemistry, genetics, and the origins of life.
  • Unit 1.3 ( Properties of Water) Students are taught the key characteristics and properties of water than allow life on Earth to be possible. Some background chemistry is necessary to fully understand these concepts.
  • Unit 1.4 (Macromolecules and Enzymes) Students will learn about the 4 basic biomolecules/macromolecules and Enzymes. Students will understand the roles of enzymes and how they can lose their ability to functions. Some basic understanding of chemical reactions and chemistry is required.
